Education
San Luis Ambulance is committed to providing continuing education (CE) opportunities to our staff and all allied agencies. We hold monthly CE classes during the last week of every month on a rotating daily schedule (Monday through Friday) at the training room in our headquarters office from 9-11 am. The topics vary from the interests of field staff to topics stemming from Quality Improvement (QI) reviews, and we include opportunities to update CPR with our certified instructors. We have partnered with Target Solutions to provide instructor based online continuing educational program opportunities.
San Luis Ambulance hosts an Advanced Protocol Review class at least once a year, and maintains training standards suggested by the Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMSA). Annual/bi-annual classes include 12-lead acquisition and interpretation, airway assessment labs, annual HAZMAT recertification, and upcoming Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) training. We are proud of our comprehensive training program and will continue to maintain the standard for our community.
Training and
Career Development
The San Luis Ambulance field employee training program is divided into three phases: the field employee academy, field training shifts as a third crew member, and a ninety‑day peer mentoring period.
The field employee academy blends classroom instruction with hands‑on practice. Training topics include an introduction to San Luis Ambulance, mandatory HIPAA privacy instruction, ImageTrend e‑PCR training, infection control, N‑95 mask fit testing, safety procedures, radio operations, both didactic and practical components of the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course, and comprehensive practical training on the ambulance and its equipment.
After successfully completing the academy, new field employees move into a role as a third crew member under the supervision of a San Luis Ambulance Training Officer. These Training Officer’s are experienced EMTs and Paramedics selected for their skill and commitment to developing new staff and guiding trainees as they apply their EMT or Paramedic education and academy instruction in real‑world situations as part of the San Luis Ambulance team.
Once both the academy and field training shifts are completed, new field employees are cleared to begin regular shifts, handle long‑distance transfers, and staff dedicated stand‑by assignments. Training continues, however, through a structured ninety‑day peer mentoring program. For their first 30 assignments, new field employees complete a daily evaluation form, which includes a section for their partner to provide feedback. This approach ensures that every experienced team member contributes to mentoring new staff. San Luis Ambulance places a strong emphasis on mentorship, recognizing that the habits formed early in an employee’s career often last for years. The goal is to instill strong, positive practices reinforced by seasoned and dedicated personnel.
